About the 2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm) photo

A 2 × 2 inch photo is a square of 51 × 51 mm. US passports and visas use it, and some other applications do too, including the Indian e-Visa. In a square photo the head should be about 1 to 1⅜ inches (25–35 mm) from chin to the top of the hair, so there is more space around the face than in a 35 × 45 mm photo. The guide in the tool is set for this size.

The photo is cropped and saved on your device; nothing is uploaded. Requirements differ by country and change over time, so always check the latest rules on the official website of the authority you are applying to.

How to use it

  1. Drop a photo taken against a plain, light wall, or click to choose one.
  2. The size 2 × 2 inch (51 × 51 mm) is already selected. Move and resize the frame so your head fits the oval and your eyes sit on the green line.
  3. Optionally change the background to white or another colour, and adjust brightness.
  4. Download the single photo as a JPG, or pick a paper size and download a print sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Is a 2 × 2 inch photo the same as 51 × 51 mm?

Yes, 2 inches is 50.8 mm, usually rounded to 51 mm. The tool uses the exact 50.8 mm so it prints at the true size.

How should I take the photo?

Stand about a metre in front of a plain, light wall, facing the camera in even daylight without shadows. Keep a neutral expression, eyes open and the whole head and shoulders in view. Ask someone to take it from eye level; selfies distort the face.

How do I print it at the right size?

Download the sheet and print it at 100% or "actual size", never "fit to page". Then cut along the guides.

Does it need a KB limit for an online form?

The single-photo download has an optional file-size limit in KB. For exact pixel and KB presets, see the Photo & Signature size pages.
