What is the Unix Timestamp Converter?
A Unix timestamp counts the seconds since 1 January 1970 at midnight UTC. Databases, APIs, logs and JWT tokens use it because it is a single number with no time zone confusion, but it is hard to read. This converter turns it into a date you can understand, and turns any date back into a timestamp.
It detects whether your number is in seconds (10 digits), milliseconds (13 digits, as JavaScript uses), microseconds or nanoseconds, and shows the result in UTC, in your own time zone, as ISO 8601 and as a relative time such as “3 hours ago”.
How to use it
- The current Unix time is shown at the top; copy it if you need it.
- Paste a timestamp to see the date in UTC, your time zone and other formats.
- To go the other way, pick a date and time and choose local time or UTC.
- Copy any value with its Copy button.
Example
1767225600
UTC: Thursday, 1 January 2026 at 12:00:00 am India (IST): Thursday, 1 January 2026 at 5:30:00 am ISO 8601: 2026-01-01T00:00:00.000Z
Features
- Live clock. The current Unix time in seconds and milliseconds, updated every second.
- Any unit. Seconds, milliseconds, microseconds and nanoseconds, detected automatically.
- Many formats. UTC, local time, ISO 8601, RFC 2822, relative time, ISO week and day of year.
- Date to timestamp. Pick a date and time in your zone or UTC and get seconds and milliseconds.
- Negative timestamps. Dates before 1970 work too.
- Private. Everything is calculated in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Unix timestamp?
The number of seconds that have passed since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970 (the “Unix epoch”), not counting leap seconds. It is the same everywhere in the world at a given moment.
Seconds or milliseconds?
Most Unix tools, PHP, Python and databases use seconds (10 digits today). JavaScript and Java use milliseconds (13 digits). This tool detects the unit from the number of digits; you can also choose it.
What is the year 2038 problem?
Systems that store timestamps as signed 32-bit integers run out on 19 January 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC (timestamp 2147483647). Modern systems use 64-bit values, which last for billions of years.
Why does the date look wrong by 5 hours 30 minutes?
A timestamp is in UTC. India Standard Time is UTC+5:30, so the same moment shows a time 5½ hours later in IST. Check that you are reading the UTC or the local line as intended.
Is anything sent to a server?
No. All conversions use your browser’s clock and time zone data.
