What is the Meta Tag Generator?

Meta tags in a page’s <head> decide how it appears in search results and when someone shares the link. The title and meta description become the blue link and grey text on Google; Open Graph tags give WhatsApp, Facebook and LinkedIn the title, description and image for the link preview; X (Twitter) card tags do the same for posts on X.

Fill in a few fields and this generator writes all of them, correctly escaped, with live previews of the Google result and the share cards so you can tune the wording before you publish. It warns when a title or description is likely to be cut off, and includes canonical, robots and theme-colour tags when you need them.

How to use it

  1. Enter the page title and a description of about 120–160 characters.
  2. Add the page’s full URL and the URL of a share image (1200 × 630 px works everywhere).
  3. Optionally add the site name, X handle, robots settings and theme colour.
  4. Check the Google and social previews, then copy the HTML into your page’s <head>.

Features

  • Live previews. See the Google result and the WhatsApp, Facebook, LinkedIn and X share cards as you type.
  • Length checks. Warnings when the title or description is likely to be truncated.
  • Complete tags. Title, description, canonical, robots, Open Graph, X cards, theme colour and more.
  • Safe output. Quotes, ampersands and angle brackets are escaped for you.
  • Local image preview. Try a share image from your computer before you upload it.
  • Private. Nothing you type is sent anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a meta title and description be?

Google shows roughly 50–60 characters of a title and 120–160 of a description on desktop (it actually measures pixels). Put the most important words first so nothing important is cut off.

What size should an Open Graph image be?

1200 × 630 pixels (a 1.91:1 ratio) works well on Facebook, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and X large cards. Keep it under about 5 MB, use JPG or PNG, and keep text away from the edges.

Does Google use the meta keywords tag?

No. Google has ignored meta keywords for ranking for many years. It is harmless to include, but your title, description and page content matter far more.

Why does WhatsApp show an old preview?

WhatsApp, Facebook and LinkedIn cache link previews. After changing your tags, use Facebook’s Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn’s Post Inspector to refresh them; WhatsApp updates when the cache expires or the URL changes.

What is a canonical URL?

The main address of a page. If the same content is reachable at several URLs (with tracking parameters, for example), the canonical tag tells search engines which one to index.
