What is the Background Remover?
Cut-out photos are useful everywhere: product pictures for online shops, profile photos on a clean background, stickers, presentations and documents that need a white background. This tool finds the main subject of your photo with an AI model and removes everything else. It works best with people, and well with products and pets against a reasonably plain background.
Unlike most background removers, it runs entirely in your browser. The AI model (44 MB) is downloaded once from Hugging Face and then cached; your photo is never uploaded. A brush lets you touch up the edges, and you can download a transparent PNG or a JPG on any background.
How to use it
- Drop a photo on the box, click to choose one, or paste it.
- Click Remove background. The first time, the AI model downloads.
- Pick a new background: transparent, white, a colour or a blur of the original.
- Fix any edges with the Erase and Restore brushes, then download.

Why does it download a model?
Removing a background needs an AI model, and running it on your device keeps your photo private. The model is downloaded once (44 MB) and your browser keeps it for next time. On mobile data, use Wi-Fi for the first run.
How long does it take?
On a recent computer with WebGPU, a few seconds. Without it, or on phones, 10–60 seconds depending on the device. The page stays usable while it works.
Does it work for products and pets?
Often, yes, especially with a plain background and good contrast. The model is tuned for people, so busy scenes may need touching up with the Erase and Restore brushes.
The edges are not perfect. What can I do?
Use the Erase brush to remove leftover background and Restore to bring back parts of the subject. A smaller brush helps around hair and fingers.
Can I use this for a passport photo?
Yes: remove the background, choose white, download a JPG, then open it in the Passport Size Photo Maker to crop it to the right size.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Only the AI model is downloaded. The photo is processed on your device.
