About the 50 × 50 mm photo
A 50 × 50 mm photo is square and almost the same as a 2 × 2 inch (50.8 mm) photo; it is used where a metric square is asked for. In a square frame the head should take about 60% of the height, and the tool’s guide is set for that. Keep the shoulders in view and the background plain.
The photo is cropped and saved on your device; nothing is uploaded. Requirements differ by country and change over time, so always check the latest rules on the official website of the authority you are applying to.
How to use it
- Drop a photo taken against a plain, light wall, or click to choose one.
- The size 50 × 50 mm is already selected. Move and resize the frame so your head fits the oval and your eyes sit on the green line.
- Optionally change the background to white or another colour, and adjust brightness.
- Download the single photo as a JPG, or pick a paper size and download a print sheet.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between 50 × 50 mm and 2 × 2 inch?
2 × 2 inch is 50.8 × 50.8 mm. They are very close, but if a form states one of them exactly, choose that one.
How should I take the photo?
Stand about a metre in front of a plain, light wall, facing the camera in even daylight without shadows. Keep a neutral expression, eyes open and the whole head and shoulders in view. Ask someone to take it from eye level; selfies distort the face.
How do I print it at the right size?
Download the sheet and print it at 100% or "actual size", never "fit to page". Then cut along the guides.
Does it need a KB limit for an online form?
The single-photo download has an optional file-size limit in KB. For exact pixel and KB presets, see the Photo & Signature size pages.
