About the 40 × 50 mm photo

40 × 50 mm, or 4 × 5 cm, is a little larger than the standard 35 × 45 mm photo and is asked for on some visa and ID applications. The face guide for this size keeps the head at about 70% of the height. Print at actual size so the photo is exactly 40 × 50 mm.

The photo is cropped and saved on your device; nothing is uploaded. Requirements differ by country and change over time, so always check the latest rules on the official website of the authority you are applying to.

How to use it

  1. Drop a photo taken against a plain, light wall, or click to choose one.
  2. The size 40 × 50 mm is already selected. Move and resize the frame so your head fits the oval and your eyes sit on the green line.
  3. Optionally change the background to white or another colour, and adjust brightness.
  4. Download the single photo as a JPG, or pick a paper size and download a print sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a 35 × 45 mm photo when 40 × 50 mm is asked for?

No. Authorities check the size. Make the exact size asked for, and always confirm it on the official requirements page.

How should I take the photo?

Stand about a metre in front of a plain, light wall, facing the camera in even daylight without shadows. Keep a neutral expression, eyes open and the whole head and shoulders in view. Ask someone to take it from eye level; selfies distort the face.

How do I print it at the right size?

Download the sheet and print it at 100% or "actual size", never "fit to page". Then cut along the guides.

Does it need a KB limit for an online form?

The single-photo download has an optional file-size limit in KB. For exact pixel and KB presets, see the Photo & Signature size pages.
