What is the URL Decoder?

Links copied from browsers, emails, analytics tools and ad trackers are often full of %20, %3D and %E0%A4%A8 escapes. The URL Decoder turns them back into readable text, including Indian scripts and emoji.

Paste a complete link and it also breaks the URL into its parts (protocol, host, path, fragment) with every query parameter decoded in a table, which is handy for checking UTM tags, redirect parameters and API calls.

How to use it

  1. Paste the encoded text or full URL.
  2. Keep “Treat + as space” on for query strings and form data.
  3. Read the decoded text, and the parameter table for full URLs.
  4. Copy the result.

Example

Input
q%3Dnova%20tools%26lang%3D%E0%AA%97%E0%AB%81
Output
q=nova tools&lang=ગુ

Features

  • UTF-8 aware. Multi-byte escapes become the right characters in any language.
  • URL breakdown. Full links are split into protocol, host, port, path, query and fragment.
  • Query parameter table. Every parameter shown as a decoded name and value.
  • Form data. Treat + as a space, as in query strings and HTML form posts.
  • Precise errors. Broken % escapes and invalid UTF-8 are reported with their position.
  • Private. Decoding happens in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Why does + become a space?

In query strings and form data, + is an encoded space. In other parts of a URL it is a real plus sign. Turn off “Treat + as space” if your text contains real plus signs, such as phone numbers like +91.

What does “not valid UTF-8” mean?

The % escapes form bytes that are not valid text, usually because the URL was cut short in the middle of a character or was encoded with an old encoding such as Windows-1252.

My URL is encoded twice (%2520). What now?

That is a double-encoded URL: %25 is an encoded % sign. Decode it once, copy the result and decode it again.

Is my URL uploaded or opened?

No. The tool only reads the text in your browser; it never visits the URL.
