What is the Protect PDF?

Bank statements, salary slips, ID copies and contracts often need to be shared securely. Protect PDF encrypts the file so it cannot be opened without the password you set, using AES-256, the strongest encryption the PDF format offers.

You can also limit printing, copying and editing. These limits are respected by mainstream PDF readers, and an optional owner password lets you lift them later. The encryption happens on your device, so neither the file nor the password is ever sent anywhere.

How to use it

  1. Drop a PDF on the box, or click to choose one.
  2. Type a password and type it again to confirm.
  3. Optionally choose what readers are allowed to do, and set an owner password.
  4. Click Protect PDF. The locked file downloads straight away.

Features

  • AES-256 encryption. The current standard for PDF security, supported by all modern readers.
  • Permissions. Allow or block printing, copying text, editing, comments and form filling.
  • Owner password. A second password that lets you change the limits later.
  • Password strength meter. See how strong your password is before you lock the file.
  • Nothing uploaded. Your file and password stay on your device.

Frequently asked questions

What if I forget the password?

It cannot be recovered: AES-256 cannot be broken in any practical time, and we never see your password. Keep a copy of the unprotected file or store the password in a password manager.

What is the difference between the two passwords?

The open password is needed to view the file. The owner password lets someone with full rights change or remove the printing and copying limits. If you leave the owner password empty, a random one is used so the limits cannot be lifted.

Do the printing and copying limits always work?

Adobe Reader, browsers and most apps respect them, but they rely on the reader software. The open password is the real protection; the limits are an extra layer.

Will older PDF readers open the file?

AES-256 needs Acrobat Reader 9 (2008) or newer, or any current browser or phone. Practically every reader in use today supports it.

How do I remove the password later?

Use Unlock PDF with the password, or keep your original unlocked copy.
