What is the Add Page Numbers to PDF?
Page numbers make long documents easier to read, print and refer to: “see page 12” only works if page 12 says so. This tool adds numbers to every page, or from a page you choose, so a cover or contents page can stay unnumbered.
Pick a format such as “Page 3 of 10”, choose one of nine positions, and see the result on any page before you download. Numbers are drawn as real text, so they print sharply at any size.
How to use it
- Drop a PDF on the box, or click to choose one.
- Choose the format, position, size and colour.
- Set the page to start on and the first number, for example to skip a cover page.

Frequently asked questions
How do I skip the cover page?
Set “Start on page” to 2. If the second page should still be called page 1, keep “First number” at 1; to count the cover, set it to 2.
What do {n} and {total} mean?
In a custom format, {n} is replaced by each page’s number and {total} by the last number. “Sheet {n} of {total}” becomes “Sheet 4 of 12”.
What is book mode?
For double-sided printing, numbers usually sit on the outer edge: right on odd pages, left on even pages. Turn on “Mirror on facing pages” with a left or right position to get this.
Will the numbers cover my text?
They are placed in the margin you choose. If a page has content close to the edge, increase the distance from the edge or pick another position, and check the preview.
