What is the JSON Unescape?
Logs, API responses and databases often store text as an escaped JSON string, full of \n, \" and \u00e9 sequences that are hard to read. JSON Unescape converts them back into the original text, with real line breaks, quotes and characters.
Paste the string with or without its surrounding double quotes. If an escape is broken, such as \x or an incomplete \u, the tool tells you exactly where.
How to use it
- Paste the escaped string, with or without the outer quotes.
- The readable text appears instantly.
- If there is an error, click Show me to jump to the broken escape.
- Copy the text.
Example
"Line one\nLine two \u2014 \"quoted\""
Line one Line two — "quoted"
Features
- All JSON escapes. Handles \n, \r, \t, \b, \f, \", \\, \/ and \uXXXX, including emoji surrogate pairs.
- Quotes optional. Works whether or not you include the surrounding double quotes.
- Forgiving. Raw quotes and line breaks in the input are kept as they are.
- Precise errors. Broken escapes are reported with their line and column.
- Private. Unescaping happens in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
What is an escaped JSON string?
Inside JSON, text is stored between double quotes, so quotes, backslashes and line breaks must be written as escape sequences such as \", \\ and \n. Unescaping reverses that.
My text is escaped twice (\\n). What do I do?
That happens when JSON is stored inside another JSON string. Unescape it once, copy the result, and unescape it again.
What does \u00e9 mean?
It is a Unicode escape: four hex digits giving a character code, here “é”. Emoji use two escapes in a row (a surrogate pair), which are combined automatically.
Is my text uploaded?
No. Unescaping happens in your browser.
